Sophomore sprinter earns first MVC weekly honor after performance on the national stage
ST. LOUIS --- UNI sophomore Faith Larsen has been named the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Swimmer of the Week, as announced by the league office on Wednesday morning. The selection marks the first weekly conference honor of her career.
The selection comes after Larsen represented the Panthers on the national stage at the Toyota U.S. Open Championships last week in Greensboro, N.C., where she competed in the 50-meter freestyle against some of the top sprinters in the nation. Larsen tied a career best time of 26.25 in the preliminary heats to qualify for the meet's C-Final, where she swam a time of 26.53.
Larsen currently leads all MVC swimmers this season with the league's fastest 50-yard freestyle time of 22.96, which she recorded during the leadoff leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay at the Kansas Classic in November. She also holds the league's sixth fastest time in the 100-yard freestyle at 50.99, also recorded at the Kansas Classic.
Diver Zoe Smith of Indiana State was concurrently named the MVC's Diver of the Week on Wednesday, while Indiana State swimmer Raine Boles was named the MVC's Freshman of the Week.
Larsen and the Panthers return to action Jan. 13-14 as they host the Illinois State Redbirds in a two-day dual at the Glen F. Henry Pool inside UNI's Wellness-Recreation Center.
