UNI quarterback leads MVFC in six offensive categories in breakout season with Panthers
CHARLESTON, S.C. --- UNI quarterback Theo Day has been selected as one of 30 players on College Football Performance's (CFPA) midseason watch list FCS National Performer of the Year Trophy, as announced on Wednesday morning. The winner will be announced on Jan. 13, 2023.
Day, a native of Canton, Mich. and transfer from Michigan State, has helped lead the one of the Missouri Valley Football Conference's (MVFC) top offensives, leading the league in multiple categories, including passing yards (2,741), passing yards per game (274.1), passing touchdowns (21), total offense (279) and yards per pass attempt (9.35). He has started at quarterback for all 10 of UNI's games this season, helping UNI win 5 of its last 7 games. Day's 64.5% pass completion percentage is currently on pace to be the 8th highest mark in a single season in program history.
Over the last 7 games, Day has thrown 16 touchdown passes for 1,851 yards, averaging 264.4 yards per game through the air. The 6-5, 231-pound redshirt junior threw for a career-high 5 touchdowns in UNI's 37-36 win at then No. 20 Southern Illinois on Oct. 29, becoming the first Panther quarterback since Ryan Helming in 1999 to throw 5 touchdowns in a single game. Day's performance against the Salukis earned him the CFPA's Co-FCS National Performer of the Week award, the first of his career.
Day is the son of Jim and Marilyn Day, and is currently majoring in public policy.
UNI returns to action on Nov. 19 as UNI visits South Dakota for the final game of the regular season. Kick off is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT at the DakotaDome, with broadcasts available on ESPN+ and the Panther Sports Radio Network.
