CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --Â A heated match between the Panthers and the Drake Bulldogs ended in a draw on Thursday afternoon.
UNI soccer found the net seven times over 90 minutes in a physical game against Drake. The two teams combined for 30 fouls, only the second game this season that the Panthers have seen that many fouls from an official. UNI contributed 13 of the 30 fouls but ended the game with more shots with 15.
The Panthers' lone goal of the game came in the 65th minute as the two teams ended the first half scoreless. Forward Sophia Meier received the ball off a quick right-footed pass from forward Lauren Heinsch. Meier chipped the ball past the Bulldogs goalkeeper and just ahead of a Drake defender to put it in the back of the net.Â
While UNI had six more shot attempts in the last 25 minutes of the match, nothing else would quite find the back of the net. Meier had another close opportunity for the Panthers in the 72nd minute as she took a shot just inside of the penalty box that was saved just below the center of the crossbar.Â
Heinsch also has a close opportunity late in the second half. Forward Kennedy Rieken kicked a long outlet pass that Heinsch raced up to on the left side of the field. Heinsch would then dodge a Bulldog defender for a low-shot attempt. The attempt forced a falling save by Drake's goalkeeper Vianey Lopez.Â
It was an even offensive attack for the Panthers on Thursday afternoon. Heinsch and defender Allison Whitaker both had three shots while three other UNI players (Meier, Caroline Hazen, Ashley Harrington) had multiple shots in the match. Overall eight Panthers attempted shots against Drake with Meier and Heinsch picking up UNI's three points in the match. Goalkeeper Caitlin Richards made three saves on four shots through 90 minutes.
