Kaylissa Arndorfer’s efficient outing helps UNI earn Friday sweep
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The UNI Panther volleyball team made significant comebacks in all three sets Friday evening en route to a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-23, 25-22) against the Indiana State Sycamores at ISU Arena to start the second half of Missouri Valley Conference play. Kaylissa Arndorfer highlighted the triumph with a .450 attack percentage while notching 10 kills.
UNI (17-6 overall, 10-0 MVC) owns a 10-match win streak along with 16 victories across the past 17 contests, and Indiana State (3-15 overall, 2-8 MVC) lost its fifth tilt in a row. The Panthers also became just the second Division I team to reach 10-0 in conference action. UNI joined Hofstra which competes in the Colonial Athletic Association.
As a team, the Panthers topped the Sycamores in hitting (.233 to .190), digs (65 to 55), and aces (six to two). Indiana State finished with a seven-to-three blocking edge. Emily Holterhaus recorded 12 terminations, and Arndorfer's 10 kills within her second double-figure effort of the season were supplemented by 10 terminations from Kira Fallert. Tayler Alden posted a double-double with 37 assists and 12 digs, and she also tallied three aces. Sydney Petersen registered a team-high 17 digs.
Inga Rotto's first-point kill was followed by a 5-0 Indiana State run. The Sycamores stretched their first-set advantage to 12-5 before the Panthers rattled off seven consecutive points featuring two Holterhaus kills and back-to-back Fallert aces. The frame went back-and-forth up to 22-22 when kills for Rotto and Alden and a Petersen service winner capped the 25-22 triumph.
The Sycamores opened the second stanza with a 6-1 outburst and pushed their lead to 10-4 and 11-5. UNI answered with another comeback and pulled even for the first time at 17-17 after kills by Holterhaus and Carly Spies. The Panthers later broke away from a 21-21 score, and another Holterhaus termination finalized UNI's 25-23 victory that secured a two-set edge.
UNI and Indiana State battled through nine third-set ties prior to a 5-1 Sycamore surge which turned a 13-13 deadlock into an 18-14 margin. The Panthers swung in front, 21-18, on their latest seven-point run including consecutive aces for Alden and two critical terminations from Arndorfer. UNI stayed ahead for the rest of the way as Arndorfer's match-ending kill finished the 25-22 win and the 3-0 sweep.
Saturday's road trip finale at Evansville features UNI's first visit this season to Meeks Family Fieldhouse which will host the 2022 Missouri Valley Conference Volleyball Championship in November. First serve Saturday between the UNI Panthers and the Evansville Purple Aces is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT including live broadcasts on UNIpanthers.com and ESPN3.
