
UNI wrestling revises dual schedule, heads to South Dakota State

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI's plans for a double dual with South Dakota State and Wyoming have changed, but the Panther wrestling team will still have a chance to compete in South Dakota this weekend.

UNI wrestling will face South Dakota State in a dual at 12:30 p.m. CT and follow the team competition with extra matches from Wyoming and South Dakota State.

Due to health and safety concerns, Wyoming will be short-handed and expected to wrestle just seven competitors. Five of the six Cowboys ranked in the top 25 will be absent: No. 15 Cole Moody (165 pounds), No. 13 Hayden Hastings (174 pounds, No. 17 Tate Samuelson (184 pounds), No. 3 Stephen Buchanan (197 pounds) and heavyweight No. 16 Brian Andrews.

No. 22 UNI wrestling (1-4 / 0-1 Big 12) is 40-5-1 against South Dakota State (4-1 / 0-0 Big 12). Head coach Doug Schwab is 6-2 against the Jackrabbits and won the 2021 meeting in South Dakota, 38-13.

SDSU's wins have come from Augustana, Harper College, Kent State and Northern Illinois. The Jackrabbits' sole loss was to Minnesota. Â The Panthers are coming off a dominant 33-9 win over Hofstra, UNI's first opponent not ranked in the top 15.

SDSU has five ranked Jackrabbits, and they are all among this weekend's probables. Six Panthers have notched seven wins over top-25 competitors.

125 |Â No. 8 Brody Teske (6-2) vs. Tanner Jordan (11-9)- Teske beat Jordan in the first match of the season, pinning the Jackrabbit in 2 minutes, 20 seconds, making it Teske's fastest career fall. He has two top-25 wins this year. His only two losses have been to Corey Cabanban of Iowa State and No. 5 Vitali Arujau of Cornell. Teske is one of six Panthers who qualified for last year's NCAA national championships.
- Jordan is 3-2 duals so far with a win over Nebraska's No. 23 Liam Cronin.

- Biscoglia beat Gross in the opening tournament of the year in a 4-1 decision. Last year, Biscoglia beat Trayton Anderson 5-0 in the second match of the season. Seven of Biscoglia's nine wins have been earned with bonus points. He has four falls already this year, putting his career total at 14.
- Gross went 19-11 as a true freshman competing unattached. He was 2-1 in a limited season last year.
- Anderson compiled a 4-11 record last year and competed in three of the dual meets SDSU had last year.
- Tagg is a transfer from North Carolina and could open competition for SDSU this week.
141 | Â No. 31 Cael Happel (12-4) vs. Â No. 11 Clay Carlson (17-1)
- Happel knocked off No. 12 Allan Hart of Missouri in his opening dual. His other three losses were to No. 1 Nick Lee of Penn State, Marcos Polanco and No. 22 Jake Bergeland of Minnesota and Collin Gerardi of Virginia Tech, now ranked 30th.
- Carlson, at two-time NCAA qualifier, took eighth at last year's NCAA national championships. He was fourth at last year's Big 12 Championships. A 2-0 loss to No. 10 Allan Hart of Missouri saw him drop from No. 6 to No. 11 in the most recent rankings. He has two wins over Minnesota's Bergeland, a decision over No. 25 Parker Filius of Purdue and pinned No. 8 Andrew Alirez of Northern Colorado.
149 |Â Triston Lara (3-3) or Colin Realbuto (7-5) vs. Zach Price (12-7) or Daniel Kimball (14-9)
- Lara is a retuning NCAA qualifier and knocked off No. 10 Mike Brill at last year's NCAA championships. He also notched a win over No. 6 Jarrett Degen of Iowa State last season.
- Realbuto competed for Italy at the Senior World Championships in Oslo, Norway.
- Price is a returning NCAA qualifier from last year. He went 6-2 in duals last year and was 17-6 overall.
- Kimball has placed in two open tournaments this year. Â
157 |Â Derek Holschlag (12-5) or Cayd Lara (12-7) vs. Kenny O'Neil (11-10)
- The Panther duo swapped places at 157 pounds and 165 pounds in the opening duals, with each taking a match at each weight. Both have placed at every open they competed in this season. Lara was eighth at last year's Big 12 Championships. Holschlag has a 10-0 major decision win over O'Neil from the Daktronics Open.
- O'Neill has represented SDSU in all of its duals this season with a 3-2 record.
165 |Â No. 20 Austin Yant (8-2) vs. No. 29 Tanner Cook (9-5) or Jack Thomsen (12-10)
- Yant is a 2021 NCAA qualifier. He took fifth at last year's Big 12 Championships and has placed at two open tournaments this season. He is coming off two dual wins, knocking off No. 26 Creighton Edsell of Penn State and Ricky Stamm of Hofstra. Yant will have a chance to avenge a loss to Cook from the 2019-20 season. Cook pinned Yant in 6:11.
- Cook pinned No. 19 Andrew Sparks but has since lost by tech fall to No. 22 Joshua Ogunsanya of Columbia and was pinned in the first period by No. 28 Joe Grello of Oklahoma. He is coming off an 8-3 loss to No. 17 Izzak Olejnick of Northern Illinois.
- Thomsen competed at 157 pounds early in the season. He moved up to wrestle at 165 pounds for the Southern Scuffle, where he went 2-2.
174 |Â Pat Schoenfelder (10-6) vs. No. 11 Cade DeVos (17-2)
- Schoenfelder moved up from 165 pounds and already has a top-10 win with an 11-9 decision over No. 9 Peyton Mocco of Missouri. After taking second at the UNI Open, Schoenfelder dropped duals to No. 1 Carter Starocci of Penn State and No. 12 Chris Foca of Cornell. He is coming off a 6-2 decision win over Hofstra's Ross McFarland.
- DeVos qualified for last year's NCAA national championships. He's undefeated in duals and has ranked wins over Mocco, No. 28 Troy Fisher of Northwestern and No. 30 Tyler Eischens of Stanford. His only losses have come to No. 3 Mikey Labriola of Nebraska and No. 12 Foca.
184 |Â No. 4 Parker Keckeisen (11-1) vs. Cade King (4-4)
- Keckeisen was third at last year's NCAA championships. He is the highest-placing freshman UNI has had since 1952. He was the first redshirt freshman to place at nationals for the Panthers since 2017. He has notched bonus points in six of his nine matches this season. Keckeisen's only career losses are to top-ranked Aaron Brooks of Penn State. Brooks, the eventual NCAA champion, beat Keckeisen 3-2 in a recent dual. Keckeisen has won every dual in which he has competed.
- King lost 6-0 to Keckeisen at this year's UNI Open. He has a career record of 23-33.
197 |Â Noah Glaser (6-9) vs. No. 21 Tanner Sloan (5-4) or Nick Casperson (11-4)
- Over his UNI career, Glaser has appeared in the Panther lineup at 174 pounds, 184 pounds and now at 197 pounds. He won the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open earlier this year. Sloan pinned Glaser in 2020 and Casperson beat Glaser 12-7 in the opening match of the season at the Daktronics Open.
- Casperson is undefeated in duals and has competed in four of the five for SDSU.
- Sloan, a two-time NCAA qualifier opened dual action for SDSU, losing to Michial Foy of Minnesota. He went 1-1 at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite before a break in his competition schedule. He just returned to take fourth at the Southern Scuffle.
285 |Â Tyrell Gordon (8-7) vs. No. 24 A.J. Nevills (13-7) or Bowen McConville (10-8)
- Gordon moved up from 197 pounds to wrestle in the heavyweight division this season. He is coming off his first top-20 win with a 4-2 decision over Hofstra's Zachary Knighton-Ward. He competed as a true freshman for UNI before redshirting in 2020. Gordon is 3-1 against McConville this season. Gordon opened the year with a 6-1 decision over McConville at the Daktronics Open. He secured third place in the same tournament by pinning McConville in 30 seconds, a career best for Gordon. McConnville took Gordon to sudden victory, bumping him from the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open with a 5-3 decision later in the season. Most recently, Gordon pinned McConville again in 6:44 to win the UNI Open. Â
- Nevills started his career at Penn State and moved to Fresno State and transferred to SDSU. He is a two-time NCAA qualifier having taken second at the Big 12 Championships in 2018 and 2019. He has wrestled in all of SDSU's dual this season.
- McConville has placed in three open tournaments this season.
