Panthers Gear Up for the Drake Relays

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI track and field team is set to compete at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, this weekend. The first university session begins on Thursday at 6 p.m. with the distance carnival. Friday's university session kicks off with field events at 1:30 p.m. and track events at 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon's university session begins at 12:30 p.m. with field events and 1:15 p.m. with track events.

Last Time Out

The Panthers last competed at the Gibson Invitational, hosted by Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind. on April 15-17. Graduate-student Darius King shattered the UNI school record in the men's shot put with a toss of 20.14m to place second. Fellow graduate-students Kyler Yodts and Thomas Yezek earned gold in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 63.21m, and men's discus with a mark of 53.76m, respectively. On the track, junior Paige Holub clocked a time of 11:04.94 in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase to place first.

UNI collected a total of ten second-place finishes in the men's shot put, men's discus, men's pole vault, men's 100 meters, men's 110-meter hurdles, hammer throw, men's javelin, men's decathlon, women's 4x100-meter relay, and women's 4x400-meter relay.

NCAA Standings
King is currently ranked second in the NCAA in the men's shot-put category, a mere 0.93m behind the current category leader, Arizona State's Turner Washington, who posted a mark of 21.07m (69' 1.5") on Feb. 3.

MVC Standings
UNI leads the Missouri Valley Conference in six events. Jill Bennett is ranked first in the MVC in the women's 400 meters, with a time of 55.43. Leading the MVC in the men's 110-meter hurdles is Jack Sumners with a time of 14.15. King is first in the men's shot put while Yezek is first in the men's discus with a mark of 53.76m. Zack Butcher is in the top spot in the men's decathlon category after posting 6238 points at the Gibson Invitational. The Panthers lead in the women's 4x100-meter relay category.
