UNI Hosts Upper Iowa on Friday

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI women's tennis team is set to host Upper Iowa at 3 p.m. at the Black Hawk Tennis Club in Waterloo on Friday. A limited number of fans will be allowed and are requested to contact the Black Hawk Tennis Club ahead of Friday's match.
Returning from a three-match stretch on the road, UNI is 1-6 (0-0 MVC).
On Feb. 26, the Panthers fell to Saint Louis, 7-0, in St. Louis, Mo. Doubles team sophomore Thaissa Moreira/senior Valentina Caro defeated Jessica Stefan/Mya Spencer, 6-3, but it wasn't enough to secure the doubles point.
UNI took on Washington U on Feb. 27, falling 6-3 to the Bears. Sophomore Emma Carr/junior Olivia Fain defeated Ally Persky/Karen Gao, 8-5, on the No. 1 doubles court, while freshman Issa Sullivan/senior Madeline Doherty defeated Emma Sass/Divya Sharma, 8-5, on the No. 3 doubles court. Caro notched the Purple and Gold's sole singles point against the Bears with a two-set victory on the No. 4 court, defeating Laurel Wagner, 6-4, 6-3.
Closing out the weekend in Edwardsville, Ind. on Feb. 28, the Purple and Gold fell, 6-1, to SIU-Edwardsville. The Panthers' sole point was earned in doubles action, with Carr/Fain and Doherty/Sullivan posting wins on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts. Carr/Fain defeated Fabiola Perez/Jordan Schifano, 6-4, on the No. 1 court, while Doherty/Sullivan edged past Callaghan Adams/Caitlyn Sporing, 7-5, on the No. 3 court.
Scouting Upper Iowa
Upper Iowa is 1-3 (0-0 NSIC), having lost three in a row to University of Mary, Minnesota State Moorhead, and Bemidji State. The Peacocks snapped their losing streak on Feb. 28 with a 7-0 sweep of Minnesota Crookston.
Freshman Varvara Ogorodnikova is 2-2 in singles action on the No. 1 court. Fellow freshman Jessa Michieli is also 2-2 in singles play, splitting her time between the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. In doubles action, Ogrodnikova/freshman Lina Ziani and Michieli/junior Alejandra Abella have 2-2 records on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts, respectively.
Last season the Peacocks went 3-7 (2-6 NSIC), defeating Dubuque, 6-1, and edging out St. Cloud State, 4-3. The Peacocks' season closed with a 7-0 sweep of Minnesota Crookston on Feb. 29.
