Panthers Post Six All-Conference Finishes, UNI Men Lead After First Day at MVC

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI had a strong first day of competition at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday. The Panther men closed out the morning session leading the team standings with 39 points, twelve points ahead of Indiana State, who sits in second place. The UNI women are second in the team standings at the close of the evening session, with 24 points. On the women's side, Southern Illinois is in first with 40 points.
Graduate students Kyler Yodts and Darius King, as well as freshman Parker Kiewiet, posted all-conference finishes in the morning session. Yodts set a new school record in the men's weight throw with a toss of 20.75m to claim gold. Also in the men's weight throw, King placed third with a toss of 19.80m and sophomore Cam Jones placed fifth with a personal-best mark of 18.90m. In the men's long jump, Kiewiet finished second with a personal-best leap of 7.32m, while sophomore Jack Sumners rounded out the top five with a mark of 7.14m.
Four Panthers qualified for the men's 200-meter finals, which will be held on Sunday. Seniors Tayshaun Cooper and Isaiah Trousil took first and second with times of 21.88 and 21.98, respectively. Graduate student Eli Hicks also advanced, taking fourth with a time of 22.12 and sophomore Zach Butcher rounded out the qualifiers, placing eighth with a time of 22.35. The men's distance medley relay team placed fifth with a time of 10:21.77.
In the evening session, redshirt senior Aleenah Marcucci and senior McKayla Cole posted all-conference finishes with Marcucci earning silver in the women's long jump with a personal-best leap of 5.79m and Cole earning bronze in the women's 5000 meters with a time of 17:34.95. The women's distance medley placed second with a time of 12:05.40.
Freshman Libby Wedewer advanced to the women's 200-meter finals on Sunday, finishing third in the prelims with a time of 24.99.

Competition resumes tomorrow with the men's session slated to start at 9:30 a.m. with the heptathlon. The women's session is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. with the pentathlon. The MVC Indoor Track and Field Championships will also be broadcasted on ESPN3, beginning at 4:45 p.m.
