Nine Panthers named to MVFC all-conference teams

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Nine Panthers earned 10 Missouri Valley Football Conference honors on the heels of Jared Brinkman's Defensive Player of the Year announcement.
Trevor Penning, Brinkman, Spencer Cuvelier, Benny Sapp III and Matthew Cook earned a spot on the MVFC all-conference first team. Isaiah Weston was named to the second team, also earning all-purpose honors. Omar Brown, Deion McShane and Bradrick Shaw earned honorable mentions.
#70 OL Trevor Penning, UNI, 6-7, 321 pounds, Sr., Clear Lake (Iowa) Newman Catholic High
Penning is the first invite to the Reese's Senior Bowl and the only offensive lineman named as a finalist for the Walter Payton Award for the nation's top offensive player of the year. He was an integral part of an offensive line that went 24-27 on red zone attempts-scores in the regular season. In all the, the offense gained 2008 yards in rushing and 1,435 in passing.
#44 DL Jared Brinkman, UNI, 6-2, 290 pounds, Sr., Iowa City (Iowa) Regina High
Brinkman earned his second consecutive Defensive Player of the Year honors last week. He led the team in tackles for losses with 15 for 50 yards. He notched seven sacks for a loss of 34 yards. He forced a fumble and recovered one fumble. He had 73 tackles on the year with 22 solo tackles. He was named to the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List early in the year.
#47 LB Spencer Cuvelier, UNI, 6-3, 245 pounds, Jr., Cresco (Iowa) Iowa Central CC
Cuvelier battled some injuries that kept him out of four games. He led in tackles per game with 75 total, 9.38 per game. He had 4.5 tackles that amounted to a loss of 13 yards. He forced two fumbles and recovered one.
#9 DB Benny Sapp III, Northern Iowa, 6-1, 205 pounds, Jr., Fort Lauderdale (Florida) Minnesota
Sapp was the UNI leader in interceptions with four on the year. He broke up another three passes. He recorded 52 total tackles, 32 solo tackles and 20 assisted. He had a tackle for a loss of two yards.
#97 PK Matthew Cook, UNI, 5-11, 180 pounds, So., Cedar Falls (Iowa) Cedar Falls High
Cook led the team in scoring with 90 points. He was 2-for-3 on field goals from 50+ yards, notching a career-long field goal from 55 yards. He led the MVFC and was fourth in nation for field goal percentage with 90.5% during the regular season. He was second in MFVC and fourth in nation for field goals per game with 1.73 at the end of the regular season. He was perfect on PATS, going 33-for-33 and averaged 58.2 yards on kickoff.
#80 WR Isaiah Weston, UNI, 6-4, 210 pounds, Sr., Albertville (Minnesota) St. Michael-Albertville High
Weston had starts in all four years playing at UNI. He ends his career as this year's leading receiver for the Panthers, averaging 73.58 yards per game. He notched 883 receiving yards on the season and was first in nation for yards per reception. He notched a season-high 181 yards and one touchdown against North Dakota State.
#24 DB Omar Brown, Northern Iowa, 6-1, 200 pounds, So., Minneapolis (Minnesota) North Senior High
Injuries ended Brown's season early. He notched 33 tackles in the seven games he played for the Panthers. He tallied 24 solo tackles, forced one fumble and broke up three passes. He notched one interception.
#1 WR Deion McShane, Northern Iowa, 5-9, 175 pounds. Jr., Freeport (Illinois) Freeport High
McShane averaged 34 receiving yards per game. His longest catch was 43 yards long. He averaged 11.66 yards per reception for a total of 408 receiving yards on the season. McShane had two receiving touchdowns. He added 24 yards on 3 carries.
#6 RB Bradrick Shaw, UNI, 6-1, 225 pounds, Gr., Hoover (Alabama)
Shaw battled health issues near the end of the season that kept him out of two games. He tallied 462 rushing yards on the season, averaging 46.20 a game. He averaged 4.2 yards a carry and notched three rushing touchdowns. He had season high of 126 yards against Southern Illinois. He was ranked 11th in conference for rushing yards per carry during the regular season.
