Panthers Defeated in Five Sets

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Tayler Alden notched a triple-double and highlighted a group of four UNI Panthers in double figures for kills, but the Missouri State Bears picked up the 3-2 win Friday in the John Q. Hammons Student Center. The set scores were 25-23, 17-25, 25-17, 15-25, and 15-11 favoring the Bears.
UNI owned the advantage in attack percentage, .267 to .182. The Panthers also had a 12-to-8 advantage in blocks along with a 64-52 lead in digs. The Panthers tallied four service aces compared to four service errors within the five-setter.
Tayler Alden posted 28 assists, a career-high 11 kills, 10 digs, and two aces in the second double-double of her career. Emily Holterhaus totaled a season-best 18 terminations while Inga Rotto and Carly Spies each added 10 kills. Payton Ahrenstorff tied a career high with a team-leading 17 digs. Inga Rotto paced the Panthers in blocks with six rejections.
Set 1: There were 14 ties during the first frame, and most of the leads out of those ties belonged to the Panthers. UNI's best advantage came at 14-11 thanks to a 3-0 run that included a Carly Spies kill and a Kira Fallert solo block. However, Missouri State broke a late 23-23 tie to win the set by a 25-23 margin.
Set 2: UNI led from wire to wire in the second stanza. The Panthers pushed their early edge to 10-4 on a combined block that included Kaylissa Arndorfer's 200th career rejection. Later in the frame, three kills in a row by Carly Spies stretched the lead to 19-11. UNI cruised from there and secured the 25-17 victory.
Set 3: Missouri State never trailed within the third while regaining the match lead. The Bears opened the set on a 5-1 run. UNI's best comeback attempt brought the difference to 12-9 on back-to-back-to-back kills for Tayler Alden. Missouri State answered with a 4-0 run and held off UNI for a 25-17 triumph.
Set 4: The Panthers and the Bears were tied, 10-10, when a block from Tayler Alden and Carly Spies started a 4-0 run. Emily Holterhaus gave the Panthers extra breathing room when her kill opened a five-point spurt that got the lead to 20-12. UNI tied the match, 2-2, by winning the set with a 25-15 score.
Set 5: Inga Rotto put UNI on the board with a kill to open the final stanza. The lead grew to 2-0 before Missouri State scored five of the next six points. UNI later climbed within 11-10 but could not complete the comeback in a 15-11 defeat.
