WATERLOO, Iowa -Â The UNI women's soccer team began tournament play on Sunday afternoon, where they fell in overtime to the Drake Bulldogs.
It was a rematch of the last regular-season game of the year, and though the score was different the results stayed the same for the Panthers. UNI would fall in the first overtime period to the Bulldogs 3-2 when midfielder Rachel Panther beat goalkeeper Chloe Russo in the 100th minute.
It was a cold and windy match at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex for the in-state rivals, as it took 6 minutes for the first shot to be registered by Panther midfielder Siri Ott. But Drake would capitalize quickly, getting a goal in the 13th minute from Libby Helverson. The Panthers would open things up in the next 20 minutes as they got a few scoring opportunities. But UNI was able to tie things up in the 33rd minute as midfielder Sophia Meier made it into the box and scored off a pass from forward Johnnie Hill.Â
In the second half, the Panthers controlled possession and were able to take 2 shots within 10 minutes. But the Bulldogs would again strike first in the half with a goal in the 77th minute as midfielder Makenna Shepard was able to find the lower right side of the net past Russo. UNI would strike again though in the 83rd minute to tie the game back up. Defender Allison Whitaker found the ball in front of the net after a corner kick and put it behind Bulldogs goalkeeper Kelsie Stone on the lower left side.
In the overtime period, the Panthers had one shot on goal as Hill went racing down the left side to put up a shot that was saved by Stone. Drake would score in the 100th minute to win the game 3-2 and advance to the semifinals.
The Panthers end their season 6-10-2 overall and 3-4-1 in conference play.Â
