UNI Tennis Closes Weekend With a Win Over Ferris State

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – UNI Women's tennis team went 1-2 on the weekend. Picking up a win over NCAA DII Ferris State 5-2, but losing to Ball State 6-1 and Western Michigan 7-0.
The Panthers started the weekend with a 6-1 loss to Ball State.
Thaissa Moreira picked up the lone win at No. 5 6-1, 6-1. The Cardinals swept the rest of the singles matched and swept the doubles point.
Saturday morning, Western Michigan earned the 7-0 sweep. Kim Zizek forced a tiebreaker set in her match, but fell 6-2, 5-7, 10-5.
In the afternoon, the Panthers faced Ferris State and won five singles matches en route to the 5-2 win. Ferris State won the doubles point, but the Panthers rallied. Zizek earned the win at the No. 2 spot with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) win. Madeline Doherty topper her opponent in the third spot 6-4, 6-4, Moreira came from behind to win her match at No. 4, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1), Valantina Caro won a tight match at the No. 5 spot 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3) and Olivia Fain defeated her opponent 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 6.
The win is the first of the season for UNI. The Panthers are now 1-6 on the year.
The Panthers will be back in action on Feb. 22 and 23 to compete against Gustavus Adolphus University and the University of Milwaukee at the Blackhawk Tennis Club in Waterloo, Iowa. Matches will take place Saturday at 12 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m.
