CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI volleyball program has signed two student athletes on National Signing Day, signing outside hitter Kira Fallert and middle blocker Layanna Green.
"We are excited to welcome our 2021 recruiting class and look forward to what these two student athletes will bring to our program," said head coach Bobbi Petersen. "Kira and Layanna are great athletes that have a strong work ethic, a desire to compete, and also have a high commitment to academics, all of which are important in our program. We are thrilled to have them both and their families as members of our UNI Panther volleyball family."
Kira Fallert, 6-0, Outside Hitter, Maplewood MN
Kira Fallert is a Concordia Academy product, playing her prep career for head coach Kim Duis. Kira is a 5 time letter winner in volleyball for the Beacons. A talented outside hitter for Concordia, Fallert finished her career with over 1500 kills, 1000 digs and over 250 aces. Fallert is a two time All-State selection (2018, 2019) and was named to the All-Tournament Team in 2019. Fallert helped lead the Beacons to a 2nd place finish in the state tournament in 2016, and 4th place finishes in 2018 and 2019.
Fallert played her club volleyball for Northern Lights, playing most recently for head coach Adam Beamer. Kira was honored as an AAU All-American in the 15 Open division in 2018. She has led her AAU team to three third place finishes at the AAU Championships (2015, 2016, 2018). She also led her team to the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships in 2017 and 2019. Fallert earned All-State honors in track in 2019 after finishing 7th at the state tournament in the 4x400 relay. Kira is the daughter of Chris and Pam Fallert and has two siblings, Megan and Erin.
"Kira has been around the sport of volleyball her entire life and has two sisters and a mom that have competed at the college level," said Petersen. "We look for Kira to compete as a six rotation player as she has a very high volleyball IQ and strengths in all areas of the game. As a defender and passer she moves naturally on the court and has a strong understanding of her platform. As a front court player, Kira has the ability to see the court and block well and is very versatile in her ability to hit different shots and areas of the court as an attacker. She is a competitor and a great teammate and will also bring many intangibles to our team."
Layanna Green, 6-0, Middle Blocker, Waukee, IA
Layanna Green joins the Panther volleyball program from Waukee High School where she has played four seasons for the Warriors, playing last season for former Panther, head coach Candice (Burke) Palea. A successful middle blocker for the Warriors, Layanna earned 1st Team All-Conference honors three times in her career, taking home the award as a sophomore, junior and senior. Green led the Warriors to state tournament berths in 2018 and in 2019.
Green played her club volleyball for Iowa PowerPlex, playing most recently for Simpson College head coach Kekailoa Palea. Green participated in the open division at Nationals the previous three years. A talented multi-sport athlete, Green earned All-State honors in track her sophomore season and qualified for the Drake Relays. Layanna is the daughter of Jill Cameron and has two siblings, Lauren and Jordan.
"Layanna brings a ton of athleticism to our middle/right side position," said Petersen. "She is also a tremendous track athlete and her strengths are definitely her speed and quickness as well as her jump. She moves easily along the net and in transition which allows her to close the block effectively and be a fast tempo option on offense. Layanna is also strong off of one foot and has good vision as an attacker. We love her versatility both in tempo and location along the net and know it will add to different options for us in our offensive system. Her competitive attitude and drive will also be a tremendous addition to our program."
