LEXINGTON, Kentucky - The AVCA announced that 1,126 teams have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2018-2019 season. This number breaks the previous year's total of 977, setting an all-time high.
The UNI volleyball team recorded a 3.41 cumulative GPA during the 2018-19 academic year, earning the teams tenth AVCA Team Academic Award and ninth in a row.
The award honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
The AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but two, while more than doubling the total over the last eight academic years. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 1,126.
"We are very proud of the hard work and dedication our student-athletes put in on the court and have great respect for their efforts in the classroom and the community," stated head coach Bobbi Petersen. "We have a great tradition and high expectations for our team's academic achievements and appreciate the efforts demonstrated by our incredible student athletes, coaches and academic support staff. We thank AVCA for doing a wonderful job of recognizing these achievements in the volleyball community."
