CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI Head Coach Ben Jacobson announced the hiring of Ike Hermer and Marc Sonnen to fill the roles of director of basketball operations and video coordinator on Friday afternoon.
Ike Hermer joins the Panthers as the director of basketball operations, replacing Derrek Netten who was named the president of Iowa Sport Supply over the summer. In this roll, Hermer will oversee the day to day operations of the men's basketball office including the teams operating budget, team travel, quality control, NCAA compliance, scheduling, and fundraising among other duties.
Hermer has spent the last five years at the University of Minnesota, the last three as the assistant director of player personnel. In that roll Hermer created scouting reports, scheduled recruiting visits, and directed the team's youth camps. Hermer served as the assistant director of operations as well as the team's academic advisor.
Hermer earned his Bachelor's Degree at the University of Minnesota where he majored in Marketing and Mass Communication in 2015 and earned his Master's Degree in Kinesiology in 2017.
Marc Sonnen rejoins the Panther basketball program, this time as the team's video coordinator. He is replacing John Little who left to take over as an assistant coach for the Wisconsin Herd, the Milwaukee Bucks G League affiliate. Sonnen will film and breakdown practice and game film and assist the coaching staff with scouting reports. He will also assist in the creation of recruiting and highlight videos.
Sonnen was part of some of the biggest moments in UNI basketball history while playing for Coach Jacobson from 2009-2013. As a freshman Sonnen recorded 3 steals in UNI's 69-67 win over #1 Kansas to help the Panthers reach the Sweet 16. As a junior Sonnen helped lead the Panthers to a trip to the NIT, scoring 15 points in the Panthers 67-65 win over Saint Josephs. Marc graduated as the all-time leader in games played (139) and three point field goals made in a single season (96).
Sonnen has spent the last five years coaching at the Minnesota School of Basketball. He served as the head basketball trainer, where he conducted individual, small group and team training sessions. Sonnen has also coached at Tartan High School at both the JV and varsity level. Sonnen received his Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and Coaching from UNI in 2013.
