Panthers Close Out the Bulldogs at Home

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Panthers hosted the Bulldogs of Drake University in the McLeod Center Sunday afternoon. The in-state rivalry ended in dramatic fashion with the Panthers coming out on top, 57-54.
The Panthers opened the game hot and maintained the lead throughout the first half. The Panther defense dominated the first half, holding the Bulldogs scoreless for eight minutes. Entering halftime, the Panthers led 29-23 with 17 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
The Panthers pushed their lead to 11 in the second half before the Bulldogs slowly chipped away to come within one. Up one point with 5:40 remaining in the game, both teams stalled with neither team scoring until the Panthers were fouled with five seconds remaining in the game. Spencer Haldeman made both his free throws to give the Panthers a three-point lead. Drake had time to put up a last-second shot but was unsuccessful, giving the Panthers their first win in 11 days.
Three Panthers finished in double-figure point totals, senior Wyatt Lohaus ended the night with a team-high 14 points, AJ Green ended with 11 and Luke McDonnell finished with 10. Trae Berhow finished with nine points while hauling in a team-high nine rebounds.
Luke McDonnell and Justin Dahl each recorded six rebounds on the night while Trae Berhow and Wyatt Lohaus each recorded two assists. The Panthers recorded four blocks on the night, the second highest mark of the season.

The Panthers will stay at home for their next contest, hosting the Sycamores of Indiana State Wednesday, Jan. 16. The Panthers will have to defend two of the league's top scorers in Jordan Barnes and Tyreke Key. Barnes leads the league, averaging 17.7 points per game while Key ranks fifth in the league averaging 16.1 points per game. The MVC matchup will tip off at 7 p.m. in the McLeod Center.
