CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Senior guard Miles Wentzien will miss the remainder of the 2018-19 season after suffering a torn ACL in the first half of UNI's game against Illinois State on Tuesday, January 8.
Wentzien played in 14 games during the 2018-19 season. The senior guard shot 38 percent from the field and hauled in 3.1 rebounds per game in his six starts for the Panthers.
Wentzien recorded eleven points in the Panthers 97-51 victory over Bemidji State in the season opener and grabbed a season-high ten rebounds, including six offensive rebounds against Southern Illinois on January 5.
"When it happens to somebody who has put so much into making this happen, it's just really, really hard," stated head coach Ben Jacobson. "The reason he got into the starting lineup is because of how hard he worked and how much time he put in outside of practice. I told him he doesn't have to go through the process of getting healthy while wishing he would have worked harder, because he did everything right. We'll do all we can to make sure he understands just how much we respect and love him, and everything he stands for."
Sophomore guard Tywhon Pickford felt the loss of the senior leader he looked up to while on the bench.
"I saw Miles go down and knew he may not be back on the court this season," stated Pickford. "After all the work he has put in and to see his love of the game makes it harder. He's a guy that works hard every day and pushes us to be better in the gym. Losing a guy like that is hard."
The Panthers will be back in action on Sunday when they host in-state rival Drake in the McLeod Center. The MVC matchup will tip at 3 pm and can be viewed on MVC TV and on ESPN+.
