3 Panthers Finish in Top 15 at Hawkeye Invite

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Three Panthers placed in top 15 of the UNI men's and women's cross country season opener today.

The women's team, ranked eighth in the region, took fourth, just one point behind Iowa Central Community College. Iowa State, ranked first in the region, captured the Hawkeye Invite title. The Iowa women's team, ranked 12th in the region, finished second. Illinois State and Drake rounded out the team finishes.

In the women's 4,000-meter race, the Panthers were led by sophomore Gabby Champion and junior Alyssa Williams, who finished 11th and 12th, respectively.

On the men's side, Junior Wal Khat finished 10th among all the collegiate runners in the 6,000-meter run. Khat finished 11th overall among collegiate and unattached competitors.

The men finished fifth overall. Iowa State, the region's top-ranked team, scored a perfect 15 points to win the meet. Iowa (No. 8 in the region) was second. Iowa Central was third, and Illinois State (No. 12 in the region) took fourth. Drake rounded out the team standings.
