CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Former University of Northern Iowa defensive backs Elijah Campbell and Malcolm Washington each signed as undrafted free agents on Saturday night, adding to the big day for Panther football.
Campbell signed with the Cleveland Browns, while Washington inked his name with the Arizona Cardinals. Both clubs have recent ties to the UNI football program, with Karter Schult signing as an undrafted free agent with the Browns last year and the duo of David Johnson and Xavier Williams playing for the Cardinals last season.
The news for Campbell and Washington adds to Saturday's big day for UNI as the pair join Daurice Fountain, who was selected by the Indianapolis Colts with the 159th pick in the fifth round earlier in the day. With the three additions to the NFL, UNI will now have placed 77 players in the league and 35 under head coach Mark Farley.
Campbell was a five-time All-American this past season, while also claiming All-MVFC First Team honors as well. The St. Paul, Minnesota native earned 51 tackles on the season, which ranked fifth on the team. Campbell also collected 12 pass breakups, which is tied for the ninth-most in a season at UNI. Campbell was a turnover machine in 2017, grabbing five interceptions and forcing three fumbles.
Washington earned All-MVFC Honorable Mention last season, as he locked down his side of the field on defense. Washington earned 63 tackles in 2017, which ranked fourth on the team and first among Panther defensive backs, while also picking off two passes. The Houston, Texas native's 45 solo tackles were second only to Jared Farley last season.
