CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI wrestling dropped its home opening dual to No. 8 Cornell, 21-14.
Cornell opened up with the nation's top-ranked wrestler Yianni Diakomihalis to jump out to a 4-0 lead with a major decision over UNI's Josh Alber at 141 pounds.
UNI traded major decisions at the next weight. No. 10 Max Thomsen dominated his match at 149 pounds with six takedowns and 3 minutes, 44 seconds of riding time to tie up the team score, 4-4.
Cornell would regain the team lead with a decision at 157 pounds.
No. 12 Bryce Steiert and No. 8 Taylor Lujan would push UNI to the lead with wins at 165 pounds and 174 pounds. Lujan's four takedowns helped secure his third career win over No. 14 Brandon Womack.
Drew Foster made a shot just as time expired in the third but wasn't able to beat the clock. He got edged out in a 6-5 decision by No. 10 Max Dean at 184 pounds.
At 197 pounds, UNI saw the debut of true freshman Tyrell Gordon. His 3-2 decision over Jake Taylor kept the team lead. Gordon opened the season wrestling unattached and winning his first two tournaments, the Harold Nichols and Grand View opens.
UNI dropped the final three matches to give Cornell the team victory, 21-14.
NEXT: The Panthers will compete at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships set for Dec. 29-30 at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
