Men's Basketball Falls to Hawkeyes in Hy-Vee Classic

DES MOINES, Iowa – The UNI men's basketball team took on the No. 22 Iowa Hawkeyes at Wells Fargo Arena as part of the final Hy-Vee Classic. The Panthers struggled out of the gate and were unable to recover, falling 77-54.
The Hawkeyes got out to a large lead in the first half, leading by as many as 21 points. The Panthers shot just 21.4 percent from the field while the Hawkeyes entered halftime making 53 percent of their shots from the floor.
The Panthers second-half shooting improved to over 50 percent, making 14 of 27 shots taken. Despite the improvement and doubling their first-half total with 36 second-half points, the Panthers were unable to mount any substantial comeback.
The Panthers went just 8 of 15 from the free throw line with Spencer Haldeman going two for two on the night, the only Panther to do so.
The fifth-year senior Wyatt Lohaus led the Panthers in scoring, finishing with 15 points while Shandon Goldman ended with 10 points. The Panthers managed only three steals on the night while turning over the ball 28 times.
Shandon Goldman and Trae Berhow led the Panthers on the boards, recording six and five rebounds respectively. Isaiah Brown led the Panthers with three assists while AJ Green, Miles Wentzien and Spencer Haldeman each recorded a pair of assists.

The 4-6 Panthers get back to the McLeod Center for a three-game homestand beginning next week. First up are the Antelopes of Grand Canyon University on Wednesday, Dec. 19. The Antelopes are currently 5-5 on the season and are led in scoring by center Alessandro Lever who averages 12.4 points per game.
