Piper Thomas Named MVC Scholar-Athlete of Week

ST. LOUIS - Kyle Hiebert of Missouri State and Piper Thomas of UNI have been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, presented by Enterprise Bank and Trust Company, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. The two athletes were honored for their performances during the period of September 18- September 24.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes are evaluated on their athletic performance during the one-week period.
Kyle Hiebert, Missouri State, So., Soccer, Accounting, 4.00 GPA
Hiebert played every minute of Missouri State's two shutout wins during the week. The sophomore accounting major played a huge role in MSU's four game winning streak and three consecutive shutouts. The MSU defense allowed 17 shot attempts with none finding the back of the net in 1-0 wins over UMKC and Evansville. Hiebert has also made an impact on the offensive end with six shot attempts this season.
Piper Thomas, UNI, Jr., Volleyball, Movement & Exercise Science, 3.47 GPA
Thomas was named the MVC volleyball player of the week for the second time this season. The junior powered the UNI offense with a .354 hitting percentage and a team-best 36 kills (5.14 kills/set) as the Panthers secured a pair of road wins to begin Missouri Valley Conference play. Thomas tallied a career-high 23 kills (.373 hitting percentage) to go along with three blocks in a 3-1 win at Valparaiso. Thomas added 13 kills (.323 hitting percentage) and four blocks in a 3-0 sweep of Loyola. Thomas ranks fifth in the league in total kills (234) and seventh in hitting percentage (.308) on the season.
