UNI Women Earn No. 13 Regional Ranking Ahead of 2017 Season

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -Â With the start of the season less than a week away, the USTFCCCA has tabbed the University of Northern Iowa women's cross country team 13th in the Midwest region.
Â
"It's a great honor for our women's program to be in the rankings this early," head coach Dave Paulsen said. "It shows the respect the coaches around the league have for our program following our successful season last year."
Â
The Panther women finished last season 10th in the Midwest Region.
Â
"We don't want to put too much weight into the rankings though," Paulsen went on to say. "It's a new year and we have a new set of challenges. We are going to focus on the day-to-day process and keep working toward accomplishing our goals."
Â
UNI joins Bradley as the only Missouri Valley members making the cut on the Top-15 Midwest Regional Poll, with the Braves taking ninth overall. The Missouri Tigers were tabbed at the top spot in the region.
Â
Both the women and men cross country squads will open the season on Friday, Sept. 1 at the Hawkeye Invite in Iowa City. The Panthers also compete in the Mayflower Day Open (Sept. 16 – Madison, Wisconsin), the Joe Piane Invitational (Sept. 30 – South Bend, Indiana) and the Bradley Classic (Oct. 13 – Peoria, Illinois).
Â
The USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning teams' strength with current season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
Â
This season's NCAA Midwest Regional is set for Nov. 10 in Ames, Iowa.
