Pickford Named MVC Newcomer of Week

University of Northern Iowa freshman Tywhon Pickford has been named the Missouri Valley Conference's men's basketball newcomer of the week.
Pickford (Minneapolis, Minn./Maple Grove HS) averaged 12.7 points and 12.7 rebounds as UNI took second place at the Battle 4 Atlantis. Pickford scored nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 61-58 win over SMU in the opening round.
Pickford led the Panthers with 18 points and 18 rebounds in a 64-60 triumph over North Carolina State in the semifinals. The 18 rebounds are the most by a Panthers since David Gruber tallied an 18-rebound effort against Montana on Nov. 22, 2002. Of his 18 rebounds vs. Wolfpack, seven came on the offensive end of the floor.
Pickford added 10 more rebounds and scored nine points in the title game vs. No. 5-ranked Villanova.
Pickford is the only UNI Panther to have made at least one 3-pointer in all seven games this season. On the season, Pickford is averaging 10.9 points per game and 11.0 rebounds per game.
UNI will be in action Wednesday at home in the McLeod Center against the UNLV Runnin' Rebels. Tip is set for 7 p.m. Call 319-273-4849 for tickets.

Pickford's total matches the 8th-best performance in the NCAA this year and ties UNLV's Brandon McCoy for the highest single-game rebound total by a freshman. The 18 caroms also matches Boise State senior Chandler Hutchison for the most rebounds by a guard.
