LAWRENCE, Kan. - The No. 4-ranked Kansas Jayhawks had all they could handle on Saturday night against the University of Northern Iowa volleyball squad at the Horejsi Center. The Jayhawks came out a winner in three sets by the score of 26-24, 25-17, 25-23.
Kansas (9-0 overall) rode the effort of Kelsie Payne's 25 kills to the win. UNI's Amie Held recorded her fourth straight double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs. The Panthers are 5-4 on the season.
The Jayhawks held an 18-11 lead late in the first set. Kansas also built a 24-20 lead and looked to close out the opening set. UNI then ran off four straight points to knot the score at 24-24. Following a Kansas timeout, the Jayhawks scored the final two points on kills from Payne.
The second set was deadlocked at 11-11 before Kansas rolled off seven straight points to take an 18-11 advantage. The Panthers could get no closer than six points the rest of the way and the Jayhawks took a 2-0 lead, 25-17. Kansas recorded an 88 percent sideout effort in the second set and hit .394 with 16 kills and three errors.
The Panthers refused to go quietly into the night and battled to a 23-23 tie in the third set following a kill from freshman Karlie Taylor. KU's Payne notched a kill and Patricia Montero scored the final kill for a 25-23 win for the home squad.
The Panthers will be back in action Tuesday at home in the McLeod Center against the Iowa State Cyclones. Tickets for the match are $1. UNI is looking to set the McLeod Center attendance mark of 6,621.
