University of Northern Iowa Director of Athletics David Harris has announced the hiring of Jamar Thompson as Director of Development - Athletics.
"We are very excited to welcome Jamar back to the Panther family," Harris said. "He has experience as a former student-athlete, great passion for the University, an understanding of the fundraising process and familiarity with many of our donors and supporters. Because of his intelligence, work ethic and talent, we believe that Jamar is a great fit for this opportunity. His ability to help us build relationships and secure major gifts will be critical to achieving our goals. We are fortunate to have Jamar in this position and believe that he will play a key role for our department."
In this role, Thompson will serve as the major gifts officer for the Panthers. This position is a joint agreement between UNI Athletics and the UNI Foundation.
"It's truly a blessing to come back to the University I love and care deeply about," Thompson said. "I couldn't imagine a better fit for me both personally and professionally to serve as the Director of Development - Athletics. I look forward to working with David, the rest of the athletic department and UNI Foundation staff to help keep us competitive in the classroom and on the field."
Thompson has worked for the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa since June 2012 and has helped raise nearly $12 million over the last four years. He has been responsible for creating and managing development activities for 24 affiliates throughout 20 counties in Iowa. He has worked directly with donors, professional advisers, non-profit organizations and community leaders.
He is a former student-athlete and captain for the Panther football squad. Thompson was a three-time all-Missouri Valley Football Conference honoree, including first-team all-league honors as a senior in 2010. He helped lead the Panthers to three MVFC titles and three trips to the FCS playoffs.
Thompson earned his bachelor's degree in marketing from UNI in 2010. He added his master's degree in communications studies from UNI in 2012. He served as a graduate assistant in the Panther Scholarship Club in 2011-2012, where he helped the PSC fundraise more than $1.1 million. He organized and coordinated fundraising events in partnership with more than 100 businesses and communicated with the UNI Foundation with donations and donor data.
As an undergrad at UNI, Thompson gained experience as a strength and conditioning instructor for United Sport and Athlete in Waterloo, Iowa, and as a sales representative for Vector Marketing Corp., in Maple Grove, Minn.
He and his wife, Natalie, reside in Cedar Falls.
