EUGENE, Ore. – University of Northern Iowa senior Paige Knodle earned first-team All-America honors today after her eighth place finish in the heptathlon, wrapping up a fantastic outing for the Panthers at the 2016 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Knodle shattered the UNI record in the heptathlon, gaining 5,833 points to finish eighth and score points on a national level. It is the second time in Knodle's career that she has earned first-team All-America honors, also finishing in the top-eight (fourth overall) in the heptathlon at the NCAA Championships in 2014.
The senior started the competition by placing third in her heat in the 100 meter hurdles, running a time of 13.50 to finish in seventh overall out of the 24 competing athletes. She followed it up with a height of 5-5.25 in the high jump and a throw of 34-4.75 in the shot put, both season-best performances and the second-best marks of her career in those events. She ended day one with a season-best time of 24.63 in the 200 meters to finish fourth in her heat and 11th overall.
Opening the second day of competition, Knodle gained a huge personal-best in the long jump, going 19-10.25 to finish second in her flight, 10th overall and keep herself ranked No. 3 all-time as a Panther. She followed it up by placing second overall in the javelin, throwing for a mark of 147-11.00.
Ending her competition, Knodle came from behind to win her heat of the 800 meter dash, coming across the finish line in a time of 2:16.98, the second-fastest time in the competition. The final event kept her locked into the eighth place spot, securing her first-team All-America honors.
Knodle wrapped up a tremendous career today in the Purple and Old Gold, leaving UNI as one of the most nationally decorated athletes to come through the Cedar Valley. Knodle finished her career as a four-time All-American.
She holds the school record in both the heptathlon and the pentathlon, along with the 60, 100 and 400 meter hurdle records. She helped her 4X100 meter shuttle hurdle relay team to a UNI record this season and broke her own personal-best and Panther record in the javelin. The Byron, Ill. native also sits in the top-five all-time at UNI in the outdoor and indoor long jump.
