UNI's Driscoll Goes Low on Day One at MVC Meet

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - University of Northern Iowa senior men's golfer Kyle Driscoll went low on Monday and is tied for fifth at the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Championship meet held at Prairie Dunes Country Club.Â
Driscoll entered the tournament looking for another top finish at the MVC Championship after placing fourth last season. Driscoll came out firing and birdied five holes in his opening-round 68 (-2). Driscoll drained birdies at No. 3, No. 4, No. 7, No. 12 and No. 14. It marked the eighth round in the 60s during Driscoll's collegiate career and it was the season-low round round the Hartland, Wis., native.
Driscoll came back with a second-round 77 (+7) and is five-over after 36 holes. Driscoll gained only a single birdie in his second round on the par-5 seventh.
Junior David Spengler continued his fine play this spring as he carded an opening-round 76 (+6). Spengler's opening round featured a birdie at No. 12.
Spengler notched two more birdies on his second 18 at No. 6 and No. 7 Spengler shot 75 for a two-round total of 151. It marked the 10th time in 11 rounds this spring that Spengler scored a round of 78 or better.
Junior Dustin Atkinson opened with a 79 that included birdies at No. 10 and No. 14. It marked the 20th round in the 70s this season for Atkinson.
Atkinson came back strong in the afternoon round with a two-over 72, which included birdies at No. 6 and No. 7.
Senior Eric Sikkema shot a nine-over, 79 in the first round. Sikkema's opening 18 included back-to-back birdies at No. 17 and No. 18. Sikkema shot 83 in the afternoon, but did bury birdies at No. 7 and No. 18.
Senior Jacob Bermel shot 81-85 (166) on Monday.
UNI is tied for eighth place with Loyola in the team standings following the opening two rounds of play with scores of 302-307 (609)..
The final 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament will be completed Tuesday morning. The winning team will advance to the NCAA Regional.
