WACO, Texas – UNI defensive lineman and recent graduate Karter Schult has been named to the 2016 AFCA FCS All-America First-Team, it was announced today by the American Football Coaches Association.
Schult is the 15th Panther selected to the AFCA All-America team and the 11th under the direction of head coach Mark Farley. He is one of six student-athletes on the first-team representing the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. Beginning this year, the AFCA has started selecting a first and second team. What makes these teams special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best – the coaches themselves.
The post-season awards have already been coming in for Schult, who was also named to the AP FCS All-America first-team. The Tripoli, Iowa, native also earned MVFC Defensive Player of the Year and All-MVFC first-team honors.
Off the field, Schult became a two-time first-team Academic All-American and was also one of 12 finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy, the highest academic achievement in football.
Currently, Schult is still in the running for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the best defensive player in FCS football. He is one of three finalists that has been invited to the STATS FCS Awards Dinner, where the winner will be announced on Jan. 6.
