The University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team will get its 2016-17 season underway Fri., Oct. 28, when the Panthers play host to the Bemidji State University Beavers in an exhibition contest.
UNI and Bemidji State will tip off at 7 p.m. in the McLeod Center. UNI men's basketball single-game tickets are on sale now through the UNI ticket office. To order your tickets, call 319-273-4849.
UNI head coach Ben Jacobson and Bemidji State head coach Mike Boschee were teammates at the University of North Dakota. Both were members of the 1989-90 UND men's basketball team that was inducted into the UND Hall of Fame.
Bemidji State University, located in Bemidji, Minn., is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
The exhibition contest will be shown live on The Valley on ESPN3. Brad Wells (play-by-play) and Kevin Lehman (analyst) will call the action on ESPN3.
The Panthers return two starters and five letterwinners for the 2016-17 season. Senior guard Jeremy Morgan is UNI's top returning scorer at 11.3 points per game. Morgan has been tabbed as the Missouri Valley Conference's Preseason Player of the Year. Morgan is the third Panther to earn the league's top preseason honor (Randy Blocker - 1993-94; Ben Jacobson - 2005-06).Â
UNI is coming off its 12th 20-win season in program history. UNI posted a mark of 23-13 in the 2015-16 season. Ten of those 20-win seasons have come since the 2003-04 season.
UNI is beginning its 11th season of action in the McLeod Center. The Panthers have made winning a priority in their home venue. UNI has posted an all-time mark of 124-31 (.800) in games played in the McLeod Center. UNI has won 11 or more games in the McLeod Center in nine consecutive seasons.
The UNI men's basketball team has been recognized with a perfect APRÂ score (1,000) in each of the last four seasons. UNI is the only MVCÂ school to do that in each of the past four years.
Since the arrival of Ben Jacobson to the UNI coaching staff in 2001, the Panthers have posted a perfect 29-0 mark in exhibition games.Â
