CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's volleyball squad came up on the short end of a 3-1 decision to the No. 10-ranked Kentucky Wildcats on Friday at the UNI Tournament in the McLeod Center.
UNI (1-3 overall) got 14 kills from junior Kayla Haneline and 19 digs from junior Amie Held against the Wildcats. Kentucky (4-1 overall) saw five players reach double-figure kill totals, which was led by Darian Mack's 17 kills and Waterloo native Kaz Brown's 13 kills.
After dropping the first set to UK by the count of 25-20, UNI bounced back with a 27-25 rally in the second set. The Panthers led early in the second set, 12-6, only to see UK take a 21-19 lead. However, the Panthers retook the lead following back-to-back kills from freshman Piper Thomas and Haneline. UNI was able to secure the second set at 27-25.
Kentucky used a 9-0 run in the third set to turn a 12-12 tie into a 21-12 lead. The Wildcats posted a 25-19 victory in the third set to take a 2-1 advantage.Â
UNI trailed 4-0 early in the fourth set, but responded by coming back to take a 16-15 lead. UK then ran off five consecutive points to take control of the fourth set. UK would tally a 25-20 win in the set to take the match.
UNI will return to action on Saturday at Noon against former Missouri Valley Conference rival Creighton. UNI will also take on No. 8-ranked Southern California on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Kentucky will take on Southern California to start the day's action at 10 a.m.
