Cyclones Blow Past Panthers, 3-0

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State tallied a 3-0 win over the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team on Wednesday at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones won by set scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-16.
Iowa State improved to 7-3 on the year, while UNI fell to 4-6 overall.
UNI held an 11-9 lead in the first set before Iowa State called a timeout. The Cyclones then went on a 5-1 to take a 14-12 advantage. UNI bounced back and ran off three consecutive points to lead, 15-14. But Iowa State was able to close out the set on an 11-2 run for a 25-17 victory.
The Panthers pounced to a 10-6 lead in the second set only to see the Cyclones run off eight straight points turn it into a 14-10 advantage for Iowa State. UNI battled back to knot the set at 17-17. Iowa State took a 22-19 lead, but freshman Bri Weber put the Panthers on her back and came up with a kill and two service aces to tie it at 22-22. The set was tied at 23-23 but a service error by Amie Held gave Iowa State a set point and the Cyclones converted with a kill from Alexis Conaway to take the set, 25-23.
Iowa State used a 9-1 run in the third set to open up a 13-7 lead. UNI closed to within four points, but could get no closer. The Cyclones would win the set, 25-16.
Weber recorded her team-leading seventh double-double of the season with 10 kills and 14 digs.
The Panthers will be back in action this weekend at the Huskie Invitational in DeKalb, Ill. UNI will take on Western Kentucky (Fri., 4 p.m.), Alabama (Sat., 1:30 p.m.) and Northern Illinois (Sat., 7:30 p.m.).
