CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball program has released its 2015-16 non-conference schedule today, highlighted by seven games in the McLeod Center.
UNI will open the season with its only exhibition match up, taking on the Sioux Falls Cougars on Sunday, Nov. 8 at home. This is UNI's second consecutive season with an exhibition against Sioux Falls, also opening the 2014-15 season against the Cougars.
The exhibition against Sioux Falls is the start of a four-game home stand for the Panthers as they take on Rockhurst University on Nov. 15, followed by the South Dakota Coyotes on Nov. 17.
The Panthers will then welcome the Iowa Hawkeyes back to the McLeod Center on Sunday, Nov. 22. The last time Iowa visited Cedar Falls was in 2013 when the two teams battled to the final minutes in front of 3,502 fans.
UNI will take on Georgia Tech and Seton Hall over the Thanksgiving Holiday, facing off against both teams for the first time in school history in the Cancun Challenge. UNI is slated to play against Georgia Tech on Thursday, Nov. 26 and Seton Hall on Friday, Nov. 27.
The Panthers return home on Dec. 2 when they take on another in-state foe, the Iowa State Cyclones. It marks the first time that UNI has hosted ISU since 2012 and the first time since the 1983-84 season that both Iowa and Iowa State visited Cedar Falls in the same season.
UNI will take on a two-game road swing when they face off against North Dakota on Dec. 5 and South Dakota State on Dec. 9. The Panthers currently have a winning record over North Dakota, including a victory in 2013.
Panther fans have the chance to get a preview of the new MVC Tournament venue on Dec. 13 when UNI hosts the Akron Zips in the iWireless Center (Quad Cities) for the MVC/MAC Challenge. This is UNI's second consecutive season with the Zips on the schedule.
UNI opened the 2014-15 season with a win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes and will close out its non-conference home schedule with them in the McLeod Center on Dec. 20. The Panthers are 3-0 in the all-time series against Tulsa after Madison Weekly scored 26 points in their 69-66 victory last season.
Closing out the 2015-16 non-conference schedule will be a match up against former MVC-foe Creighton on the road. The game against head coach Tanya Warren's alma mater is slated for Dec. 22 before the holidays.
"We are very excited about our non-conference schedule and the challenges it will bring," Warren said. "To have the opportunity to host both Iowa and Iowa State is great for our players and our fans. Also, the opportunity to play two great programs in Cancun will give us a stretch of games that will make us better down the road. Adding the quality of all our other non-conference opponents makes this arguably our toughest schedule we have had here at UNI."
The Panthers finished last season with an overall record of 17-15 and a MVC record of 12-6 to place in the top-half of the conference for the sixth year in a row. UNI also appeared in its fifth postseason appearance in the last six years, hosting Missouri in the first round of the WNIT.
UNI has now had 17 or more wins in six consecutive seasons, all under the direction of head coach Tanya Warren. The Panthers will bring four starters back to the lineup during the 2015-16 season, along with MVC Sixth Player of the Year Stephanie Davison and 2014 MVC All-Conference first-team selection Jen Keitel.
