CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI crowned two champions and took second in five other weight classes at the UNI Open Saturday.
Â
Cody Krumwiede and Max Thomsen won titles at 197 pounds and 149 pounds, respectively.(12/12/2015) 2015 UNI Open
Â
Thomsen dominated the field, earning bonus points in every match. He pinned two wrestlers in the first period and earned two major decisions. He topped it off with a 20-3 tech fall over Iowa State's Blayne Briceno.
"Max scored a lot of points," said head coach Doug Schwab. "Max had some attitude. He went out to make a statement, and he did. We need to have more guys going out there to make a statement and not to just get through it. They need to make it a fight for seven minutes."
Krumwiede notched two falls and won in dramatic fashion against a wrestler who has beaten him twice this season. Krumwiede tied up the match at 3-3 just as time expired to push Robert Steveson of Minnesota into sudden victory. A takedown sealed his 5-3 decision.
"He made the guy earn things," said Schwab. "It's nothing flashy, but it's fighting. He made it hard for that guy every time. We talk about building our reputation of what kind of competitor are we going to be. Are we going to be the kind of competitor who rolls over and gives in or be the kind of competitor who fights tooth and nail for everything? When a guy knows he has to step on the mat and wrestle that, they never look forward to it. Proud of how he competed."
Peter Stewart gave UNI a second medal at 149 pounds. A loss to Thomsen pushed him into the consolations, where he grabbed third.
"Peter Stewart wrestled two matches back to back, and it was just fight," said Schwab. "A lot of it was attitude. He wrestled hard. I'm pretty proud of how those guys came back to compete."
Sixteen Panthers medaled:
125 pounds – Leighton Gaul 2nd, Jay Schwarm 3rd, Tanner Rohweder 4th
"It doesn't have to be flashy, but it has to be with a lot of pride," Schwab said. "We're always building for something. No matter what that is – whether it's wrestling or life, we're always building habits. How you are as a person and how you compete are pretty comparable, so we need to identify what habits we want to build."

Â
NEXT UP
UNI will be on the road until Jan. 29. They will be at Midlands Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Illinois.
"We've got some time now," said Schwab. "Guys got to take care of finals. We'll send 15 guys to Midlands."
