Shockers Stop Panthers, 3-0

WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita State Shockers scored their first home win over the University of Northern Iowa Panther women's volleyball team for the first time since Oct. 17, 2008, with a 3-0 win on Saturday night. The Shockers won by set scores of 25-15, 25-16, 25-20.
UNI (15-13, 9-6 MVC) had won six straight matchups against Wichita State at Koch Arena heading into tonight's matchup. The Shockers moved to 12-2 in MVC action and 21-7 overall. The Shockers also maintained their first-place standing in the league.
Wichita State never trailed in the first set and hit .387, while UNI was limited to a .132 hitting percentage. The Shockers tallied 14 kills in the opening stanza en route to a 25-15 victory.
The Shockers again led wire-to-wire in the second set after leaping out to a 6-1 advantage. The Shocker pounded out a .389 hitting percentage with 18 kills to go against only four attack errors. UNI recorded a .161 hitting percentage with nine kills and four errors in the set as the Shockers scored a 25-16 win.
UNI was able to record its first lead of the match in the third set at 6-5, but it was short-lived as Wichita State went on a 7-1 run to take a 12-7 lead. UNI battled back to within 14-13 and 15-14 but could not retake the lead. Wichita State belted out a .346 hitting percentage in the third set, while UNI was held to .029 with nine kills and eight errors.
Wichita State's .376 hitting percentage in the match is the highest for a UNI opponent this season - besting the mark of .368 set by Southern Illinois on Oct. 24. UNI's .107 hitting percentage was its fourth-lowest output on the season.
UNI's Amie Held recorded eight digs in the match and has pushed her career total to 1,456 - only one behind Bobbi (Becker) Petersen's total of 1,457 from 1986-1989.
UNI will be back in action next Saturday in Des Moines at 7 p.m. against the Drake Bulldogs in the Knapp Center.
