EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team fell to Evansville 1-0 in their Missouri Valley Conference Women's Soccer Tournament semifinal contest on Friday night. The Panthers (7-9-5 overall) were outshot 16-4 in the game but produced a few quality chances in the second half.
UNI fell behind early as Evansville's Colleen Dierkes deflected the lone goal of the evening into the back of the net in the third minute to give the Aces a 1-0 lead.
Sarah McHugh recorded the Panthers first shot of the contest with 18 minutes remaining, sending one wide left from the edge of the 18-yard box. UNI was outshot six to one in the opening half. Whitney Blunt tallied three saves in the first half as she finished with six saves to bring her season total to a career-high 97.
Evansville pressured the UNI defense once again early in the second half, getting two shots off that were blocked by Panther defenders and then cleared out of the box to end the Aces' attack.
Whitney Blunt finished with six saves to bring her season total to a career-high 97.
UNI put together a string of chances minutes later, taking all three of their second half shots in a 10 minute span while earning two corner kicks along the way, but could not produce the wouldbe equalizer.
"I thought the effort was great (in the second half)," said UNI Head Coach James Price. "The plan was to start the second half quickly and aggressively and we did that. We didn't get the chances. Our final ball probably just wasn't good enough. You have to give Evansville a lot of credit. I thought they defended really well, didn't make many mistakes and made it very tough for us."
