Haneline's Career-High Surges UNI Past Bradley, 3-1

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa volleyball squad concluded its Alumni/Homecoming weekend with a 3-1 victory over the Bradley Braves in the McLeod Center. UNI used a career-high 17 kills from sophomore Kayla Haneline in the triumph.
The Panthers (7-5 overall, 2-0 Missouri Valley Conference) won by set scores of 25-15, 27-25, 24-26, 25-13. Bradley dropped to 0-12 overall and 0-2 in league action.
The Panthers and Braves were knotted at 14-14 midway through the first set before the Panthers exploded. UNI closed the first set on an 11-1 run, including the final six in a row. UNI was dialed in offensively with a .277 hitting percentage that included 17 kills and four errors on 47 attacks. The Panther's offense was led by Eryca Hingtgen and Haneline, who each tallied five kills in the opening set. UNI limited Bradley to a .078 hitting percentage.
Bradley took an early 6-2 lead in the second set. UNI came back with a 5-1 run to tie it at 7-7. Following a 12-12 tie, UNI scored three in a row to take a 15-12 advantage. A Lindsey Schulz solo block gave the Panthers a 17-13 lead, their biggest margin of the set. But the Braves refused to go away and tied it back up at 19-19. UNI crept back up by two and forced a Bradley timeout. The Panthers were up 24-22 with a pair of set points but failed to convert. UNI was able to close out Bradley on the Panthers's fourth set points, 27-25.
The Braves started strong in the third set with a 9-6 lead. UNI came back with a 7-1 run to take a 13-10 lead. UNI's run extended to 11-3 when the Panthers gained a 17-12 advantage. For the second consecutive set, Bradley failed to give in and rallied to take a 24-23 lead. However, this time the Panthers could not hold off the Braves and the visitors posted a 26-24 victory in the third set.
UNI got off to a fast start in the fourth set and took a 9-3 lead after an ace by Haley Wandrey. Bradley closed to within 12-9, but UNI extended it back to a six-point margin at 16-10. The Panthers continued to roll in the fourth set and pushed the lead to 21-11 following a pair of blocks by Lindsey Schulz and Haneline. UNI's 9-1 run ended on a kill by Haneline that saw the Panthers's lead at 22-11. UNI won the fourth set, 25-13.
UNI will play host to the Iowa State Cyclones on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the McLeod Center. The match will be shown live on the Panther Sports TV Network (CFU Ch. 15, KCRG Ch. 9.2, WOI Ch. 5.2, and KCAU Ch. 9.2).
