ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team improved to 2-1 on the year with a four-set victory Southeast Missouri State University on Saturday at the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic.
UNI won by set scores of 26-28, 25-19, 25-19, 25-21.
For the third straight match to begin the season, UNI dropped the first set of the match. This time SEMO rallied from a 19-15 deficit to knot the match at 19-19. SEMO was able to hold off a match point for UNI at 24-23 and was able to close out the first game, 28-26.
The Panthers responded with a strong set No. 2. UNI had leads of 5-1 and 12-6 before SEMO cut the margin to 15-13. UNI did not allow SEMO to get any closer and the Panthers tallied a 25-19 triumph to even the match at a set each.
UNI and SEMO were deadlocked at 10-10 through the first 20 points of set No. 3 before used a 12-4 run to pull away for the 25-19 set victory.
The Panthers pounced on SEMO in the fourth set by taking an 11-4 lead before SEMO took a timeout. SEMO pulled to within 24-21, but UNI scored the next point to clinch the set and the match, 25-21.
UNI will be in action next weekend at the Bluegrass Battle in Lexington, Ky. UNI will match up against Kentucky on Friday at 10 a.m. UNI will also take on Creighton on Friday at 4 p.m. The Panthers will close out the tournament by taking on the USC Trojans on Saturday at 4 p.m.
NOTES: Leigh Pudwill led the offensive effort with 18 kills … Eryca Hingtgen recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs … Kinsey Caldwell narrowly missed a triple-double with 47 assists, 12 digs and eight kills … Amie Held contributed 18 digs … Kayla Haneline netted a team-high seven blocks ... Pudwill and Caldwell were named to the All-Tournament Team.
