WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa won its second match of the day, and eighth consecutive home victory, with a 6-1 triumph over Upper Iowa at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.
UNI (8-6 overall) won both of the doubles matches that were contested to secure the doubles point. The Panthers were able to added five singles' wins to finish their second victory of the day. UNI had scored a 6-1 win over South Dakota State at Noon.
"Upper Iowa is a feisty team that is well coached," UNI head coach Daniel Finn said. "I have a lot of respect for Joey (Barnes) and the work he is doing at Upper Iowa. They are going to be a very good Division II team soon. It was definitely a tough match for us to play right after a good South Dakota State team.
UNI's dual win was the Panthers's eighth straight home victory this season. The eight-straight home wins is the longest home-court win streak for UNI since the 2008-09 season.
"Today was long, but the way the ladies competed over the past two days I have to commend them for their effort," Finn said. "We certainly didn't play near our best the past two days but we came away 3-0 and are now 8-0 at home. It's been a tough week on the ladies from our Nebraska trip to these matches as well. Five physical matches in a week is tough for anyone. The ladies get a much needed and deserved rest now over the weekend and we don't play until next Sunday so that will give us time to get ready for Graceland."
UNI will look to run its home-court win streak to nine on Sun., March 9, at 3 p.m. when the Panthers play host to the Graceland College Yellow Jackets at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.
NOTES: Senior Krissy Lankelma won her 79th career doubles match to tie Joni Eaton (1983-1987) for No. 4 on the Panthers's all-time doubles' win chart ... Lankelma also earned her 70th career singles win to move into No. 7 on UNI's all-time singles' win list.
