CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Panthers advanced five wrestlers to the UNI Open championship round and had 15 medalists Saturday.
Curt Maas led the way for UNI, winning the 174-pound weight class, 3-2, in the second sudden victory round over Iowa State's Logan Molina.
"He won the tournament and kept his composure too," said head coach Doug Schwab. "It's a lot to build on for him."
Maas, a sophomore, improves to 14-2 overall and is undefeated in duals. He cracked the top four in Mid-American rankings this week. Â
The Panthers had four more medalists and one more runner-up than they did in the 2013 UNI Open.
Freshman Josh Alber (133 pounds), sophomore Tyler Willers (141 pounds) and Basil Minto (197 pounds) took second. Cody Caldwell returned to competition for the first time since winning the UCM Open at 184 pounds. He bowed out of the championship match to take second.
"The first match, he was really moving well and getting offense," said Schwab. "That's where we want him. It was good to get him back out there, get three matches under his belt and know that he is OK and ready to compete at a high level."
The Panthers grabbed three spots in the standings at 197 pounds and 141 pounds.
"We have some options at 141 pound and 149 pounds, said Schwab. Â "I thought we had some guys wrestle well at those weights."
Final placing:
- 125 – Bryce Meyer 5th
- 133 – Josh Alber 2nd
- 141 – Tyler Willers 2nd, Jesse Etherington 5th, Tyler Patten 6th
