CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University Salukis rallied for a five-set win over the University Northern Iowa Panther volleyball squad on Friday night at Davies Gym. The Salukis won by set scores of 25-19, 25-27, 24-26, 25-19, 15-8.
SIU moves to 13-13 overall and 7-7 in Missouri Valley Conference action. UNI falls to 16-9 overall and 10-3 in MVC play.
The Panthers led 4-2 in the first set before the Salukis went on a 9-1 run to take an 11-5 lead. UNI was able to put together a 4-0 run to trim the SIU advantage to 13-11. Ashlee Sinnott served up an ace to cut the margin, 19-18. However, SIU went on a 6-1 run to end the set, 25-19.
UNI pounced out to a 6-1 lead early in the second set. The Salukis tied the set at 11-11 before UNI pushed the lead back to 13-11. But a 6-1 run by the Salukis gave the home squad a 16-14 lead. The Panthers battled back and surged ahead 23-21 behind a strong effort from Autumn Alitz. Alitz accounted for two blocks and two kills in the 5-1 run for the Panthers. SIU refused to give in and rallied for a 25-24 lead and served for the set. UNI then responded by scoring the final three points of the set to take it, 27-25. Reigning MVC Player of the Week Kayla Haneline notched a kill to tie the set at 25-25. Haneline then blocked SIU's Taylor Pippin to give UNI a set point, which it cashed in.
UNI looked to be in control of the third set with a 16-12 lead. SIU had other thoughts as the Salukis cut the lead to 16-15 following a timeout. The Panthers had to withstand a late charge from the Salukis to score the set win. UNI led 24-22 but SIU knotted it up at 24-24. Then just like a set earlier, Haneline came up with a block of Pippin to give UNI another set point. This time Haneline and Kinsey Caldwell combined for a block to secure the set, 26-24.
The Salukis trailed 12-11 midway through the fourth set before running off six straight points to a take 17-12 lead. SIU then cruised to a 25-19 victory to force a fifth and deciding set.
SIU jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the fifth set. UNI closed to within 10-8 on a service ace by Caldwell, but the Salukis scored the final five points of the match to earn the victory.
UNI will be in action again Saturday night in Evansville, Ind., against the Evansville Purple Aces. UNI and Evansville will get underway at 6 p.m. tomorrow night at the Carson Center.
