UNI Gets Sixth Consecutive Win With Sweep Over NIU

DEKALB, Ill.- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team swept Northern Illinois 3-0 Tuesday night in DeKalb, Illinois. This is the sixth consecutive win for the Panthers.
Eryca Hingtgen tallied 12 kills, and Shelby Kintzel had a .375 hitting percentage. Kinsey Caldwell led with 34 assists and 12 digs for the Panthers.
Northern Illinois took the early 8-5 lead in the first set. A kill by Leigh Pudwill in the next play helped spark a 6-3 Panther run to tie the set up at 11-11. NIU answered with a kill in the following play to take the lead at 12-11, but a kill by Hingtgen tied the set again at 12-12. The match came down to the wire with the score tied at 22-22. Two kills and a block by Caldwell in the next three plays gave UNI the 25-22 set win.
The Panthers turned the tables in the second set and took the early 5-1 lead. A 7-3 run helped give UNI an eight point lead at an NIU timeout. The Panthers cruised through the rest of the set and won it 25-18 to take the 2-0 match lead.
With the score tied at 6-6 in the third set, back-to-back UNI kills by Hingtgen and Shelby Kintzel helped the Panthers take the 8-6 lead. UNI maintained the lead until the Huskies caught up and tied it at 17-17. An attack error by the Panthers gave NIU the 18-17 lead, but a service error by the Huskies allowed UNI to tie it up at 18-18. The score went back and forth again and was tied at 19-19. A bad set by NIU and a block by Courtney Kintzel helped the Panthers take the 21-19 lead. UNI held on to win the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
UNI returns to action on Friday when they open MVC play against Loyola at 7 p.m. in Chicago, Illinois.
