UNI Falls to South Dakota, 87-67

VERMILLION, S.D. – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team fell to the South Dakota Coyotes in Vermillion, S.D. tonight, 87-67. The Panthers now have an overall record of 3-7.
Jen Keitel led the Panthers with 16 points and a career-high five blocks while Madison Weekly added 11 points and three rebounds.
Only eight total points had been scored at the 14:00 minute mark in the first half, with South Dakota leading 6-2. Weekly scored the Panthers first points of the game, followed by a layup from Keitel to make the score 6-4 with 13:10 left in the half.
At the 10:42 mark, Keitel snuck a pass into the lane for Hannah Schonhardt who was able to get an easy layup to cut the USD lead back down to a two-point game, making it 12-10. Despite Schonhardt's points, the Coyotes were able to go on a 15-2 run to take a 23-10 lead with 5:53 left in the half.
UNI cut the USD lead down to 10 points after Dohnalek served a great pass into Davidson for a quick two points to make the score 30-20. The Coyotes converted on a speedy layup themselves followed by another bucket from Dohnalek to cut it back to 10, but USD hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to take a halftime lead of 35-22.
South Dakota opened the second half by knocking down two consecutive three-pointers to take a 41-22 lead with 18:39 on the clock. The Panthers then got some offensive momentum going after Dohnalek drained a three-pointer followed by a steal and layup by Brooke Brown to make the score 44-31 with 15:29 left in the second half.
Moran Lonning gave UNI a spark off the bench in the second half, hitting a jump shot and then dishing out an assist on the next offensive play to make the score 58-41 USD with 11:47 on the clock. UNI cut the USD lead to 11 points at the 9:29 mark when Brittni Donaldson hit a huge three-pointer to make the score 60-49.
Ty Smith scored a contested layup and a free throw in the final two minutes of the game to make the score 85-66. Lonning also added a free throw, but UNI eventually fell 87-67 in Vermillion.
Post-Game Notes vs. South Dakota
Jen Keitel has reached double-figures for the second game in a row after finishing with 16 points against South Dakota. She shot over 50 percent for the seventh time this season.
Jen Keitel notched a career-high five blocks against the Coyotes.
Brooke Brown scored eight straight points for the Panthers in the second half after notching a steal and a fast break layup, followed by two consecutive three-pointers.
Madison Weekly reached double-figures for the third straight game for UNI, finishing with 11 against South Dakota. This marks the fourth time in the last five games she has scored 10 or more points.
