
UNI Falls to Southern Illinois in Four Sets

CARBONDALE, Ill.- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team was defeated by Southern Illinois 3-1 on Saturday night in Carbondale.
Macy Ubben led the Panthers with 15 kills, and Shelby Kintzel had a .571 hitting percentage. Kinsey Caldwell recorded 38 assists and Amie Held tallied 17 digs for the Panthers.
Southern Illinois took early control of the first set as they jumped out to a 6-3 lead. The Salukis increased their lead to six at 13-7. A kill by Courtney Kinzel helped the Panthers go on a 3-0 run to bring it back within three at 13-10. That was as close as the Panthers got to SIU as the Salukis regained the momentum and won the set 25-18.
The Panthers started off slow in the second set. SIU had the early 9-6 lead in the set. A kill by Macy Ubben helped spark a 6-3 comeback run by the Panthers to tie it up at 12-12. A kill by SIU in the next play though helped them go on a 5-0 run to give them the 17-12 lead. Southern Illinois went on to win the set 25-19 to take the 2-0 match lead.
With the score tied 6-6 in the third set, an attack error by Southern Illinois helped UNI go on a 3-0 run to take the 9-6 lead. SIU came back and tied to set at 13-13. A kill by the Salukis in the next play gave them the 14-13 lead, but UNI answered with a kill by Courtney Kintzel to tie it at 14-14. The set went back and forth until it was tied at 17-17. A kill by Leigh Pudwill started a 8-3 run by the Panthers to give them the 25-20 set win.
The score was tied 8-8 in the fourth set when an attack error by the Salukis sparked a 6-0 run by UNI to give them the 14-8 lead. SIU slowly came back and tied the set up at 20-20. A kill by Pudwill in the next play gave UNI the 21-20 lead, but SIU answered with a kill in the next play to tie it again at 21-21. The score went back and forth until the set was tied at 23-23. Back-to-back kills by SIU gave them the 25-23 set win and 3-1 match win.
