
Panthers Defeated by No. 5 USC

LOS ANGELES, Calif.- The No. 23 University of Northern Iowa women's volleyball team was defeated 3-0 by the No. 5 USC Ladies of Troy in Los Angeles, California, Friday night. This was the second game of the Luxe City Center Trojan Invite for the Panthers.
Krista DeGeest led the Panthers with nine kills and a .571 hitting percentage. Molly Turk had 25 assists and Candice Burke posted 20 digs to lead the Panthers.
The Panthers fell behind early in the first set. USC got the early 6-0 lead and the Panthers slowly started to get on the board. Several errors by USC helped the Panthers get on the board at 3-6. UNI started to battle back and several kills by DeGeest and Braun eventually helped the Panthers tie it up at 13-13. USC took off from there and the Panthers couldn't answer. UNI fell 18-25 in the first set.
UNI kept it close at the beginning of the second set. USC would take the lead but then the Panthers would answer and tie the set. A kill from Megan Lehman gave the Panthers the lead at 7-9, but USC had two straight kills to tie it up at 9-9. It went back and forth again until the two teams were tied at 16-16. A kill by Samantha Bricio gave USC the lead at 17-16 and they cruised from there. USC won the second set 25-20.
In the third set, USC had a 6-1 lead at a UNI timeout and didn't let up from there. The Panthers couldn't keep up with USC and lost the third set 16-25 and lost the match 3-0.
The Panthers will play their last game of the Luxe City Center Trojan Invite tomorrow when they take on Mississippi State at 2:00 p.m.
