Panthers Sweep Drake Bulldogs

CEDAR FALLS; Ia.- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team swept the Drake Bulldogs 3-0 in the McLeod Center Friday night. This gives the Panthers their 12th conference win on the season.
Macy Ubben led the way for the Panthers with 12 kills and a .458 hitting percentage. Krista DeGeest followed with 10 kills and a .421 hitting percentage. Molly Turk notched 39 assists and Candice Burke recorded 14 digs for UNI.
With the score tied at 8-8 in the first set, the Panthers took advantage of a bad set by Drake to take the 9-8 lead. A kill by Megan Lehman in the next play and an attack error by Drake in the play after that gave UNI the 11-8 lead. The Bulldogs eventually brought it to within two at 20-18, but the Panthers were able to hold them off and win the set 25-20.
The score was 7-7 in the second set when kills by Lehman, Krista DeGeest and Shelby Kintzel helped the Panthers go on a 4-0 run to make it 11-7. Drake fought their way back to within one at 13-12, but UNI took off from there. A kill by Amy Braun helped to spark a 5-1 run to make it 18-13 at a Drake timeout. UNI maintained the lead the rest of the set and won it 25-17.
The third set started out close for the teams. The score was 9-8 Panthers when a kill by Drake tied the game up at 9-9. Lehman got a kill in the next play to give UNI the 10-9 lead. The Panthers then went on a 7-3 run to give them the 17-12 lead at the first timeout of the set. UNI continued this pace the rest of the set to win it 25-17 and the match 3-0.
The Panthers take on conference rival Creighton University tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. in the McLeod Center. It is Youth Night at the match so all youth 12 and under get in for free.
