WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team defeated the Creighton Bluejays 1-0 on Thursday night. Junior Sam Copley scored from nearly 40 yards out when her shot deflected off of a Creighton defender and into the right side of the net. The one score proved to be enough as junior goalkeeper Erin Zaideman recorded a season-high five saves.
Copley fired her only shot into the back of the net while senior Kiki McClellan tallied three shots with one on goal. Fellow senior Ashley Capone, juniors Allie Brees and Claire Clark, sophomore Shauna Happel, and freshman Sarah McHugh each recorded a shot in the match.
UNI was outshot by Creighton 12-9, including a mark of 5-2 in shots on goal. Creighton held the advantage in corner kicks as well, 10-6.
Zaideman rose to the occasion, turning away five Bluejay shots and posting her fifth shutout of the year.
With the victory, UNI (8-9-1, 3-2-1 MVC) gets tabbed with the No.4 seed for the Missouri Valley Conference tournament. The Panthers will host the fifth-seeded Indiana State Sycamores. The match will be played on Sunday, Oct. 28, at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex. First kick is set for 1:00 p.m.
The winner of the UNI-Indiana State match will meet Evansville in the semifinals on Nov. 2 at 3:30 p.m. in Omaha, Neb.
