Panthers Top Cincinnati 3-1, NIU 3-0 to Finish 3-0 in NIU Invite

DEKALB, Ill. – The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team topped Cincinnati 3-1 and Northern Illinois 3-0 to finish a perfect 3-0 in the NIU Invitational on Saturday. Junior Krista DeGeest and senior Bre Payton were each named to the all-tournament team.
The Panthers topped Cincinnati 25-17, 25-19, 16-25, 26-24 in the first match of the day. DeGeest led the Panthers with 16 kills, and Shelby Kintzel added 12. Amy Braun and Megan Lehman each added 10. Bre Payton tallied 49 assists and 11 digs in the match, and Candice Burke led UNI with 15 digs.
In the second match of the day, the Panthers topped Northern Illinois 25-21, 25-20, 25-20. Michelle Burow notched 14 kills in the win, and DeGeest added 10. Payton finished with 33 assists, and Braun came up with 13 digs.
The Panthers held an attack percentage of .271 in the tournament, while holding their opponents to a .182 percentage.
DeGeest led UNI with 3.8 kills per set with a .469 attack percentage in the NIU Invitational to earn all-tournament honors. Payton finished with 1.6 kills and 11.8 assists per set for the Panthers.
The Panthers return to action on Monday when they host Marquette at 6 p.m. in the McLeod Center in the home opener.
