Panther Women Fall to Illinois State in Semifinals

St. Louis, Mo.- The No. 2 ranked University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team fell to the No. 6 Illinois State Redbirds 4-2 this afternoon at the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Championships.
The Panthers got off to a rough start in doubles play. Laia Gonzalez-Garrido and Phoebe Walker fell to Aniko Kiss and Phyllis Tigges of Illinois State 9-8 (7-5) in the No. 1 match. Illinois State's Hannah Esker and Ariane Maack topped Lara Okicki and Chelsea Moore 9-7 in the No. 2 match. Jessica Kunzelmann and Krissy Lankelma won their No. 3 match, defeating Heather Nisbet and Carolina Abello of the Redbirds 8-4.
Panthers tried to turn it around in singles, but could not get the job done. In the No. 1 spot, Walker fell to Kiss of ISU 6-3, 6-2. Gonzalez took down Tigges of the Redbirds 8-6, 6-0 in the No. 2 match. Illinois State's Esker defeated Kunzelmann 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 4 match. Moore was victorious in her No. 5 match, defeating Gabby Phillips 6-3, 6-3. In the No. 6 match, Lankelma suffered a 8-6, 6-4 loss to Stefanie Youngberg of Illinois State.
Illinois State will take on the No. 1 ranked Wichita State Shockers in the finals tomorrow.
