EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Evansville used 16 points off the bench from Ned Cox and the Purple Aces scored a 70-62 victory over the University of Northern Iowa at Roberts Stadium on Tuesday.
UNI (18-8 overall, 9-5 MVC) was led in scoring by sophomore guard Anthony James. Junior guard Johnny Moran also tallied 15 points. Evansville (14-10 overall, 8-6 MVC) used a 39-5 edge in bench scoring to score its second straight win over the Panthers at Roberts Stadium.
UNI led 15-9 early on, but Evansville used a 15-2 run to take the lead at 24-19 with 4:47 left in the game. Evansville led 34-24 at the intermission as the Panthers failed to make a first-half free throw for only the second time this season.
The Purple Aces upped the margin to 16 points at 42-26 just five minutes into the second half before the Panthers began chipping away at the lead. UNI closed to within four points, 58-54, on a layup by senior guard Kwadzo Ahelegbe with 1:43 remaining in the game. But that was as close as the Panthers would get the rest of the way and Evansville made 12 free throws in the final 1:38 to ice it for the home squad.
UNI will be back in action Saturday in the McLeod Center against the Wichita State Shockers. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
